what to talk about first

This was an amazing weekend, for many reasons. We decided to get out of Dodge and head up to the cabin for a good dose of grandparent goodness and a day trip to Watkin's Glen to see the endurance race.

I'll start with the cabin. It has been a little bit since we have been there so really we should have been better prepared. We know all too well what can be done in short amount of time, give these guys too much free time and you may be in for a real shock. Treat may be a better word.

First the garden:

Last year, and last time we were up here for that matter the garden was a few raised beds with some yummy goodness, no fence, no banked herb garden.

You can see they have been busy. Even in the cold mountain air at the cabin they are already harvesting lettuce and spinach. The peas are looking close, the broccoli looks like it may take over the word and we literally could have watched the tomatoes grow while we were there.
mmmmm, beets.

We are all looking forward to a long summer of harvesting homegrown treats.

The fun doesn't stop there. The kitchen table windows used to look out onto a small patch of woods tucked between the old and new parts of the cabin. That space has now been turned into a magical world for kids. There is a fort with it's own window box, from there you can slide down to the covered sand box. Coming off this are two swings with room for one more. A friend, I know where your mind is going!

There is even a hammock between the buildings. I had to check it out while Grandmom pushed Mette in the swings.

When we got there, all of Otto's trucks were waiting for him in the sand box.

Mette getting some special puppy Hugo kisses.

With all of this our weekend would have been full and packed with exciting stories. I have to say, both children went above and beyond the call of duty getting dirty playing on their new playground. I am still trying to figure out how to get some of their clothes clean. Still, we had planned on going to the track to see some "racecars" as Otto calls it. Saturday morning we were on the road by 8. Most of the time is it really tiring that our kids get up so early, but on days where you have things to do, it helps get the show moving that much faster. Going to Watkin's Glen has become a family tradition for us. Eric and I have been going since before we had kids and now taking them makes it even better. Mette was sporting her new pink headphones and Otto was wearing his old favorites. It was pretty windy but you can see we were ready to go.

One of Otto's favorite parts about going to the Glen is he knows there are vendors selling toy cars and he gets so excited to have a new car. In addition to expensive collectors kits, they also sell cheaper toys for kids and Otto tends to stock up. SInce these cars are guaranteed to be played with everyday, a few more seems like a good idea. This time Otto picked out a Brumos Porsche like the one we were going to see race. He was beyond excited about it. After lunch they opened the pit lane to fans so you could get up close the cars and see the drivers. We took the kids down and Otto was really into it. As soon as we got to the Brumos car he took out his car and set it down on the pavement to introduce it to the big one. It was pretty adorable. There he was in a crowd of people telling his car "hi big Porsche, how are you?". Hurley Haywood, Porsche racing legend, saw Otto doing this and had to come over to see him. Eric introduced himself and mentioned that he had taken a few of his driving courses years ago. Hurley bent down to Otto's level and asked him if he would like to sit in his race car. We have video of him picking Otto up and putting him in the driver seat of the car you see here. It was the coolest thing. No one else was even touching the cars and Otto was sitting in the driver seat. I don't know who thought it was cooler, Otto or Eric, but they were both over the moon. The video will have to wait a day or two since eric is in the middle of crazy meetings in New York. When he gets home I am going to have to set aside some serious time for him to edit videos for us! More and more I think I am going to need to learn Final Cut Pro. Guess I could just watch the insturtional videos eric has made. Trouble is, it will take me so long to get half as good or fast as him....

Two very happy boys!

Last but not least, Mette and the banjo. Mette has fallen in love with playing the banjo. I think there just may be a 1/2 size one in her future. Periodically throughout the day she strolls over and plays a few bars. It is quite charming.
