Yesterday

was a good day.
My mom, Otto and I headed south to visit my grandmother while Eric and Mette stayed home. It was so much fun to have one on one time with Otto and it sounds like Mette and daddy had a great time too. She was a perfect angel for him all day. Not a whine or a cry, no mention of me (!!), one mention of Otto, went down for her nap without me no fuss, took a 2.5 hour nap (stinker!) and was generally awesome all day. Otto, Grandmom and I had a great trip. It is a 3 hour drive each way to go to my grandmother's so being a good traveler is a must. We sang songs, told stories and took naps the whole way there and back. When we were visiting my grandmother we went to a park to run around, played soccer mocker in the common area, played with cars, had lunch (nursing homes are really easy places to take kids to eat fyi, all the food is very kid friendly, as are the portions) and headed home. To quote James Taylor, we went "home by another way" and drove through Oley where I grew up. It was the first time in a LONG time that I had been back. It was so amazing to see it again. It is really beautiful there, and still is which is the best part. It is an oasis of country in a sea of surrounding yuppy land, but still so calm and beautiful. No doubt the calm is more appealing when you are not a teenager. Despite not having driven those roads for years, I knew every turn and tree before the came into sight. Our reason for going through the valley was to pick up my mom friend's Deb to bring her up to the cabin for the weekend. Turns out we had the wrong weekend to pick up Deb, she is coming NEXT weekend, but we got to see the family for a little visit and pick blackberries so all was not lost. The house I grew up in, an amazing iron master's mansion from the 1740's still looks wonderful. It has been a bit gentrified with some crazy stone retaining walls, but it looks loved and well cared for which makes my heart smile. Otto got to go through not one, but two covered bridges, including the one I used to walk to and play in as a little girl. He said he liked that one the best, good taste that kid. It also happens to be the longest covered bridge in Berks County, you know, for bragging rights.
It was a wonderful day. Spending time with Otto was a real treat and hearing about Mette and daddy's day was the icing on the cake. While being needed is lovely, it is also really nice to know that I can go away for the day and all will be well.

Plums

If you ask me what my favorite fruit is, I would have a real hard time coming up with an answer. I LOVE fruit. Even a top five would be hard but I can say for sure that plums would make the cut. There is something about the tart skin and sweet flesh that I love. Needless to say we came home this weekend with quite a haul of plums.

Eric's mom, Grandma Bah to the kids, was visiting this weekend and came along on our food adventures.

Mette with her first plum that she picked herself.

Otto also managed to find grapes ready for the eating.

I have never canned plums before, but I have to find a way to keep them around longer than just a week or so. I canned four quarts as an experiment. They all worked (the buttons don't pop). I will do a taste test tomorrow and let you know how they are.
Here is my sterile set-up.

Ready for the hot syrup.

Beautiful.

Peaches

I decided to break up all the photos I have to post into categories based on food, mainly since that how I think of things. Pretty much everything revolves around food, meals and what is coming next. A good friend of mine's mother and step-father just bought an orchard south of town. The orchard has been ignored for the past four years which makes it well on it's way to being organic, the goal of the new owners. Despite the fact that they still live in New England they are running the orchard on a small scale. It is open for "you pick" and the harvest is amazing. We missed the cherries but now there are peaches and plums with nectarines just around the corner. The fall will bring apples and pears and if I can pipe in suggestions, raw cider. Growing up my mom's parents had fruit trees growing around the farm and lived very near a large orchard. I have very fond memories of picking peaches and apples with my grandmother. Not much can compare to peaches warm from the sun over vanilla ice cream. I was pretty excited to head down to the orchard this past weekend. Sharing fun food memories with our children means a lot to me. I have to say the orchard was everything I wanted it to be. Not much. No fancy anything just trees, limbs heavy with fruit, open space, great views and warm sun. We got there early so we could get out before the warm sun turned into gross way too hot sun. I know Megan's mom and step-father will want to do more with the orchard, but I hope, for my own selfish reasons, that they keep it a bit wild and free. There is something about all those trees lined in rows, so planned, in contrast to the freedom of minimal structure and harvesting your own food. Regardless, I have to admit, I am pretty excited to be "on the inside loop" of an orchard. If I had any free time I would totally volunteer my time there. Even the mowing looks like fun.

The kids seemed to really enjoy it as well. It took about two minutes for them to start digging in.

We picked quite a haul of ripe peaches. So many in fact that I was afraid we wouldn't be able to eat them fast enough, so I made a pie. Because when life gives you too many ripe peaches, what else can you do? Despite the peaches being so juicy and making the bottom crust a bit soggy, I would still rank this crust as in my top 5. It was also a sneaky way to make dessert for Eric. Sunday was his birthday but he won't let us celebrate it so I have to bit a cleaver.

Otto is a true Storb child and a major pie fan. Waiting for it to cool was a tough job.

Stay tuned for Plums!

Dreamy

I have some great shots of fun food discoveries we have had this weekend but they are on the iPad and it is in the middle of it's big monthly charge so I can't edit and post them right now. Plus, Mette has taken to screaming and not sleeping which has left me with little, if any, ambition to do much of anything. I'll be honest, I should clean, hang up laundry, cook... but I am going to look for some jammie patterns and think about getting up to see if I have the right size needles to start a knitting project.

There will be more interesting stories later.

Where were we?

Sometimes I worry that this blog will look like a visual version of a playgroup conversation. For those of you not familiar with "conversations" that take place when there are upwards of 10 small children ranging in age from one year to 4 where everyone is talking at the same time and disagreements can end in hitting are biting so they must be monitored very closely, let's just say that many ideas are started never to be finished. Every Wednesday once I feed and get the children to bed after playgroup I sit and think about all the things I started to say to someone only to be interrupted along with all the what sounded like they would have been interesting stories I heard fragments of but never really got the whole thing. It is the same with the blog, in the evening when my mind is finally free to wander I find myself writing long posts with funny interludes and great stories. The problem is I am usually in the shower or already in the bed, no where that I could actually capture the thoughts and but them in a safe place for a later post. I need a voice recorder for my inner thoughts. Can someone invent that for me? Thanks.

There are a lot of things to catch you up on so forgive me if this is a hodgepodge list of accomplishments and stories.

Where to start.... how about swimming lessons? Otto has been taking swimming lessons every morning, this is his second week. He goes with eric which is a nice special time they get to spend together just the two of them. We were hesitant to sign him up for classes because he gets very overwhelmed in group settings and I was fearful of him getting scared of the water because he was scared of the class. Then we went to a pool party at a friends house and he was terrified of the water. That sealed the deal, he was going to be scared with or without the classes so I thought we better try. Learning to swim is something that i think you HAVE to do. The thought of an older kid who can't swim scares me a bit. Plus, I am like a fish in the water and I am really looking forward to having many a long summer day with the kids at the pool and in order for that to happen they need to learn how to swim. I fully thought that Otto wouldn't go near the pool and would be terrified in the class but he has surprised us and is doing great!! All of the other kids in the class have taken the class before which I actually think is good because he gets a chance to see the other kids doing stuff without being scared. Each class he is more and more brave but the best part is he loves swim class. He is excited to go everyday and tells me "it was GREAT" everyday when he gets home. Eric is pretty sure that if enough treats were offered he would swim underwater across the whole pool. I am fine with him being motivated by a piece of candy at the end of class from the teacher if it means that he pushes his boundaries and tries new things. After this week he has a week off then we will starts two more weeks of class to finish off the summer. I think that we will try a program over the winter as well to keep the momentum going. Perhaps Mette will try some too. Something tells me she would LOVE swim class!

In more Otto news, he a had a complete allergy testing done a few weeks ago. We needed to check his peanut levels so he had an appointment with the allergist but I also wanted to get him tested for seasonal allergies because he seemed to be very sniffly lately. There is a lot of talk that SPD can be caused by allergies or at least aggravated by them so I wanted to get any allergies he might have in check. Eric is allergic to quite a bit so it would stand to reason that Otto may be as well. He tested positive to dust mites, trees, grass, cats, cockroaches and ragweed. The allergist said as long as we keep the cats out of his room (which we have always done) that it shouldn't be a problem. He asked what Otto's reaction to the cats was, which is nothing unless he actually lays on them, then he wants to rub off the cat hair. He doesn't get a rash, he doesn't itch, he eyes don't burn or run and his nose doesn't run. So for now the cats are staying, but if his allergies become worse we will have to think about new homes for them. I am going to ignore that for now, good old Storb repression at it's finest! The dust mites we can and have done something about. I have been washing ALL of his bedding down to his new allergy protective mattress and pillow protectors, along with Mette's in hot water and running them through the dryer, normally I would line dry them. This includes blankies, alligator and mun-key which requires quite a bit of planning on my part. I order an all natural laundry additive so I won't have to use hat water or the dryer which will be nice. I am all for killing dust mites, but the environmental impact of all that hot water and dryer time is a bit much. I also ordered a earth friendly, plant based spray for the furniture and rugs to use between steam cleaning that should kill dust mites as well as neutralize pet dander. Uncle Ben, all of this should be good for you too! :) Just in case you were thinking you would google dust mites to learn a little bit more about them, I would like to stop you. Take a minute and think about how prepared you are to change how you look at everything in your house that is made of fabric. You also need to think about how you feel with bugs crawling on you all the time. If only someone had warned me before I started googling. There really should be a page that blocks you from learning too much about something that is totally going to freak you out. Needless to say, Otto's bed is not the only one that is getting the FULL weekly cleaning. And I should add, I always changed the sheets every week, but I do so much more now. Don't say I didn't warn you. Right now, while the grass allergies are high we are giving him children's Zyrtek in the morning. It works great and makes a big difference. The allergist said when ragweed hits we might need something stronger but we will cross that bridge when we get to it. He also thinks that Otto may be growing out of his peanut allergy which 10-20% of kids do. That would be AWESOME!!! He is going to do a blood profile in 6 months to see if his levels are going down. We know now that small amounts of peanut don't cause immediate anaphylaxis shock which is great, but the less I have to worry when sending him out in world, the better.

Speaking of sending him out into the real world, he starts preschool this fall! I can't believe it. The week after Labor Day he will be going every Tuesday and Thursday morning. I don't know what I will do with myself.

And now Mette. Mette, Mette, Mette my darling. First, she is scheduled for her plastic surgery to remove the cyst above her eye on the 3rd of August. We had the pre-op last week and she has been cleared for take off. We have to be there at 6 in the morning so my mom is coming the night before to hang out with Otto while we are at the hospital. It should be a very simple procedure and we should be home by lunch. There is a chance that she will have a black eye with some swelling for a while but other than that she will be the same. Let's hope all of that goes well.

Mette is an adorable little stinker. She throws a temper tantrum complete with throwing herself on the floor screaming, tears, holding out her hand and yelling stop, the works, when you kindly remind her not to eat books. It is a bit intense here these days. I keep telling myself that it is just a phase and it won't last forever, but WOW, she is a drama queen! She is also insanely charming and sweet so that helps her last through the day. She is in a big mommy phase and me leaving the room and/or other people looking at her is often enough to send her over the edge. In her defense she has cut three molars in the last two weeks and there may be more teeth coming but I am too scared to stick my fingers in there to be sure. These teeth are ones she has been working on, no lie, since last Christmas. It has been a long road. The past few weeks there have been many tears, some fevers and diarrhea but I think they are finally cutting through and not going back up, I hope.

The other news from Metteville is the potty. I am hesitant to write about it, but here it goes. I am also fully aware and fine with the fact that this may turn into nothing. For a while now she has been interested in sitting on the potty and she has pooped once or twice on the potty and there has been the occasional pee but really most of the time she sits there for one millisecond and pops up and announces "done!". But as of last evening and this morning she has been peeing an pooping on the potty with only two small mistakes. I have just had her in a t-shirt and nothing else around the house to make it easier. A couple of the times she has said potty and ran over and peed. Often I ask her if she needs to go and when she sits on the potty she pees. She thinks it is very exciting. With Otto, he was 2 1/2 which was very early for a boy, but he still got it in a weekend. With Mette only being 17 months old I am sure that I will have to ask her about 100 times a day if she needs to go potty for it to take and it still may not. But regardless, I haven't changed a stinky diaper in a while so that rocks!

As for me. I am doing well. A bit on the tired side, but who isn't really. It has been crazy hot which I hate. It is cooler today but really anything above 75 I am not too fond of. I am already dreaming of fall. I have been working of a few small projects but mainly just trying to keep up with laundry and cleaning. It seems like a never ending quest.

So that's the news from our side of town, how are you?

Sling Baby

One of Otto's friends, we will call her "F" turned three this week. In addition to having a birthday she is also going to be a big sister any day now, though if this baby follows in the footsteps of her big brother and sister it could be a while before we get to meet her. F loves to play with baby dolls. Rarely is she ever seen without one. Knowing that her mom is a baby wearing, sling toting kind of girl I thought a good birthday present would be a sling F could have to carry her baby dolls in. Luckily I happened to have my own F sized person here in the house to help make sure it was the right size.

Otto actually really liked having the baby in the sling and happily sat on the couch and watched a whole Word World with the baby in the sling, making sure to support her head. It was a bit cuter than I could handle.

There are more tales to share but I have to get back to cleaning because I am hosting the "baby is almost here" mom's brunch tomorrow and I have miles to go before I am ready for it!

my Mun-Key

During our recent trip to visit family in Chicago Mette fell in love, big time. It all started innocently enough, a small crush you might say. One day after waking up from her nap she looked up to the top of the bookcase in the room where we stay and saw a stuffed mama gorilla holding a baby gorilla. Mun-key, Mun-Key she shouted full of glee. It took me a while to see what she was looking at, but once I saw the stuffed animal I got it. While there are many things that are off limits to little person's hands when visiting grandparent's houses, a stuffed animal in the room where we stay seemed like it might be ok for her to play with. I got it down for her and she held on to it the whole way downstairs while proclaiming Mun-key!!! I checked with the powers that be, namely Yiayia and Papou and it was determined that the mun-key could stay with the girl. Good thing because it would have been a tearful break-up I'm afraid. Since that afternoon when she is getting tired or you speak of bed instead of just asking for Bibi (her word for her blankie which sounds an awful lot like baby, which means doll, which is very confusing) she also asks for Mun-Key. Every time we sit down to nurse before bed she holds her Bibi and now she needs Mun-Key as well. It is starting to get a bit crowded in the glider chair.

Really though, how can you resist something as cute as this?

Welcome to the family Mun-Key, I have a feeling you are here to stay.

Carrots!!!

We have been eating cucumbers from our garden every few days for the last couple weeks, but this has been our first BIG harvest. Otto helped me bring in carrots and one beet. Soon we will plant more to harvest in the fall.

Our little Joseph Gordon-Levitt look alike.

Being a small family farmer is a tough job.

Our harvest.

Yum!

And then there was this.... I haven't had the heart to cook her. I mean look, she clearly has places to go.

Our one and only beauty carrot.

Uncharted territory

As many of you know, today was the World Cup final between Spain and The Netherlands. We hosted some friends with Dutch heritage who share our (though really eric's) love of cereal. While watching the game we feasted on all the sugar cereals we (I) would never allow in the house. Lucky Charms, Fruity Pebbles, you name it, we had it. We have done this before with these friends and it is always a ton of fun. They have two kids who are just enough older than ours that they can play with Otto and Mette and keep them busy. Mette took a nap at her normal time, but since Otto was too excited about the big kids coming we let him stay up to play and watch the game. He literally ran around ALL afternoon and ate marshmallows. It was a good day to be a kid in our house. Mette woke up during the first half and soon was proclaiming her love of Franken Berry. The game ended after double overtime a little after 5. By the time our friends left it was close to 6. A solid two plus hours away from bedtime, however this was the scene after Otto sat down on the couch mid sentence after they left.

He crashed in about three seconds. We had a really hard time getting him to wake up. In a rather desperate attempt to keep him up to a normal bedtime we took him outside to eat dinner at a local restaurant. It worked and eric is tucking a very sleepy boy into bed right now

So while you may think the players in the soccer game look like they are tired after the game. Apparently just watching the game will do you in as well.

Who would have thunk

Today I tried brushing Mette's hair for the first time ever. It makes a big difference in terms of how wild it looks.

Imagine that! Funny more people don't try it.

Running Day One

Forgive me for a totally "about me" post.

For a while now I have been getting back into working out and it has been feeling really good. Well, good in a painful way. I was foolish enough last week to do a major workout before having to carry Mette through multiple airports. Not my best planning ever. Due to having very little time to myself I have been working out during naptime which is hard. Sometimes the kids wake up before I am done or worse yet, without me getting a shower. Plus, naptimes are my time to clean, cook and sew so it has been cutting into that a lot which is a bit hard on me. I also have been feeling like I could use some cardio. Cardio is hard to do in the house with sleeping children. I keep thinking about running, but being someone who for YEARS has wondered how and why people run as it looks so painful and boring, it has been a hard sell. I was raised in a house of runners so it seems normal to me, for other people to do, not me. I swam for years and somehow endless laps back and forth is comforting to me, but running made no sense. If there was a pool in my backyard I would totally fall into swimming again in a heartbeat, but since there isn't and going to the gym, when the lap lanes are open is more scheduling than I can handle right now. Scheduling, that has been the other big hurdle with exercising for me. Eric is out of the house around 8 and gets home in the summer around 4 or 4:30. Normally he gets up with the kids in the morning (I do the middle of the night shifts, and yes, it is still shifts, sigh) and I got an extra half hour to hour to be in bed. I have not been interested in giving that up, until now. There just is no other time for me to workout that isn't the evening and evenings just don't work for me. I am a morning person so really, what is getting up a little earlier? I hatched a plan and ran it by eric last night when he got home for NYC. I would get up a little after 6 and head out to run, he would get up with the kids like normal, I would be home and showered by 7 or 7:30 so he could be out the door at his normal time. He was game, but wondered why. Why indeed. The reason, I want time to myself. Time with my own thoughts in my head. Time where no one is asking my why, or how, or what. Time where I am not getting snacks, or drinks, or changing diapers. Time to listen to NPR, or music I like, or nothing. Time to do what I please in my own head.
So this morning I set an alarm, the first time I have done that in over three years, and got up. I was hoping to make an escape before the kids woke up but they were up when I was done getting dressed. As I put on my sneakers Otto said, "wow mom, cool shoes, you look like a teamer". I never wear sneakers which is obvious from their reaction. When Mette saw me she immediately bent down and ran her fingers over the designs in my sneakers. She cried as I left out the backdoor, but calmed down soon per eric's report.
And with that I was free. It was glorious. I ran further and with more ease than I expected which was nice. But really I am not interested in distance or speed, I just want to be out there, on my own. I was lovely. My goal is three times a week and I think I am going to look forward to each day. So for all the years I laughed at runners, I apologize. I totally get it now.

The Party

The main reason for us traveling to Chicago this weekend, besides visiting family, was to celebrate uncle Ben's engagement to Shannon. Yiayia and Papou held a wonderful party in their back yard for the occasion. It was quite a beautiful night. As an engagement gift to the couple I made the a banner to hang at the party and future events should they desire. Tentative colors for the wedding are navy and lime green with a hint of pink.

The happy couple on the left, Eric Mette and I on the right.

Mette in her party dress, thank you Nonna Jen!

Eric, Otto, Dee (yiayia), me, Mette, Rogers (papou)
Ben, Shannon

The whole Greek clan.

Summer parties are magical.

Matching

I have a tendency to dress members of our family in matching outfits without realizing it. Many is the time that we have gone to pick up eric at work only to notice Otto and Eric are wearing the same outfit. Apparently that skill carries over to eric's dad too.

This was Otto and Rogers the first day we arrived here, matching shirts!

Not to be left out, Mette had on purple pants.

Ca-Go

Our clan is spending this holiday weekend chilling in Chicago (ca-go to Mette) with family. Uncle Ben and Shannon were treated to a great engagement party, much family fun was had and fireworks were enjoyed last night. How is you 4th treating you?

We are enjoying many early mornings (thank you central time zone) and many late nights (too much excitement to think of going to bed on time). Despite all that, there have been few meltdowns and many giggles. Today is our last day here but our first day without an agenda so it will be nice to get out and play for a bit. Eric and Rogers are currently up for a spin in Roger's plane and when they get home it will be time to play.

There are many wonderful pictures from the weekend to share, and I will get them up soon. Hope everyone else is having a great weekend!
