visits, books and floors

Action packed and adventured filled, that has been our style here at the ranch. First off, Uncle Racer and Alex were at the cabin for a brief visit so we headed there to hang out with them. This was their first Mette sighting. I think they thought she was ok. She seemed to like them quite a bit. She even hung around and watched some TV with them.
Mette has been quite fond of her toes for a while now, but she is really getting good at getting them in her little grasp. If in the right position she can even get them into her mouth. More than once she has really chomped down on them which makes her pull back mighty quickly. Funny, she doesn't pull back when she chomps into your finger!
It is a good thing we put this shirt on her when we did, it is getting tight! Burrito Bros. is a Gainesville staple.
The motorcycle at the park is still a huge hit with Otto. It is often the first place he runs to when we get there. In fact he differentiates between the two big parks by calling one the "motorcycle park" and one the "firetruck park".
Chillin' on the swings
Otto loves to read books, always has. It is looking like Mette will follow in his footsteps. She is really starting to follow along and enjoy the whole experience. She has even started to touch the pages in the books with different textures. Otto will tolerate sharing reading on mom or dad's lap with her for a few stories but when she gets too interested in touching him he looses interest. Mette on the other hand wants nothing more than to try and get a piece of her big brother to chew on, or at least pull on his clothes. Rarely does she seem him sit still long enough to even think about trying to touch him!

Yesterday morning there was a big crane truck across the street doing some work on the church. Otto and I were watching it from the window but you couldn't really see what they were doing. I suggested we go out and watch the action from the front steps for a while. I went off to find my shoes and to get Mette, while I was doing that, Otto found his construction worker vest, hat and drill. He was all set to go. This photo is priceless.
In addition to normal crazy life here, this is the week that we finally poured the concrete floor in the kitchen with the help of grandmom and grandpa. They came down on monday and were finished by this afternoon. Both Otto and Mette loved having the special visitors and we all love the new floor.
I did a lot of the prep over the past few weeks to get the floor ready while kids were sleeping but wasn't able to help too much today. Mainly because there were two small children in need of wrangling. Mette watched the excitement for a while from the ergo but eventually threw in the towel and took a nap.
Here is the floor as it is right now. The seems between the sections are almost done being sanded, then once it sets up a bit more I can start to oil it. That will seal and help darken the color. After that dries we can wax and buff it, then it is good to go! I can't wait to have a nice easy to clean floor that looks beautiful.
Additional update on kids:

Otto is still in the throws of being two, but what can you expect? He is after all TWO. That being said, he is still so much fun to be around and especially listen to. He is a constant source of entertainment for all members of the family. I am assuming it is a developmental cycle but he seems to be experiencing some separation anxiety and stranger anxiety. It isn't too surprising because every day he is able to do more which allows him to be further away from us, which I am sure some where is unsettling to him. Speaking of doing more and going further away, he is mastering climbing. He has always been good at walking, running, getting up on things etc.. but lately he is unstoppable. At the park he scurries up ladders and over bridges. If it is meant to climb, or looks like it could be climbed he is on it. He is also starting to show some interest in Mette. Up until now he hasn't really seemed to care one way or the other about her. Honestly that has been a good thing. While it is always cute to see a big sibling doting on the younger one, it is nice not to have to worry about him sticking his fingers in her eyes, laying on her or any other thing he would think was nice to do but really wasn't. Now that she is rolling around and really starting to engage with the world he seems to notice her more. The other morning at breakfast he had a long talk with eric about how he and Mette were going to be friends and all of the things they were going to do together. He also has started bringing her toys and wanting her to stop crying. It is very sweet to see him warming up to her. I think it shows a genuine fondness since he clearly isn't doing it because we are making a big deal about it, he is actually staring to think she might be worth looking into. Of course this is all before she starts crawling and going after his toys. I am fully prepared for his interest to wane when that starts.

As for Mette, she is a girl with a mission. She is getting really good at rolling over and is starting to understand that if you keep rolling in the same direction you can get somewhere (lookout Otto). She is getting much better at holding toys and chewing on them which keeps her very entertained. Also, this past weekend after a almost 5 month span of spitting out every brand of pacifier we tried, she decided that they might not be so bad. In fact she seems to like them and enjoys not only playing with them, but letting them help her take naps. Speaking of naps, we are still working on those. She still only sleeps for 30 minutes during the day. You can set you clock by it. She takes between 3 and 5 thirty minute power naps during the day. They are starting to be a regular times and I am really hoping that soon they extend to more than half and hour. Her nighttime sleep was doing really well with only two wake ups during the night but a cold and shots put and end to that. Last night was the first night we were back to a more normal sleep schedule and it was much needed. I hope we continue getting better in that department as well. She is over all such a happy baby there is really no place to complain. Besides after Otto, I know we can handle anything and more importantly, I know she will sleep eventually. Besides, I like cuddling with her little self in the night, provided it isn't for hours on end, or every two hours :).

4 Months

Mette had her 4 month apt. today. She weighs a whopping 15.3 pounds and is 25.5" long. She is doing great and they were quite pleased by her cuteness. She came down with a major case of a stuffy nose and didn't sleep much last night so I postponed her shots until next week when I hope she is feeling better. It doesn't seem fair to have a little cold and then get shots on top of that! Otherwise all was well.

We could start her on baby cereal now but we are waiting until 6 months to give her food. She is doing so well as is and if you wait longer you can give them more interesting things instead of just cereal. Despite that Mette is very interested in eating. I tried sitting her in the hang-on booster seat we keep in the kitchen for when Isaac or other children come over for lunch. It was in instant hit. She loves her new seat. I think we are going to move Otto to a booster at the table soon and give her the highchair. Even if she isn't eating she seems to like sitting at the table.

LBI

To continue with our journey, when we flew back from Jacksonville to Philadelphia we got our car and headed to LBI (Long Beach Island, NJ) Beach Haven to be exact. It is becoming a great summer tradition of crashing Grandpa Chris and Nonna Jen's beach house for a few days. We go in June before it is hot and full of people which is my kind of beach town. The house they rented this year was adorable and we had a blast. The weather could have been sunnier and Otto could have been less of a two year old but we still had a wonderful time and I wish we were still there. We do still have a bit of salt water taffy and fudge to keep me going though thank goodness!

Before I write another word, I am going to give credit where credit is due. After Grandpa Chris took a few pictures of the kids after we arrived at the beach house I put down my camera and didn't pick it up until we packed to go home. The following photos are all stolen off his Flickr page.

The house had an outdoor shower but better than that in Otto's mind was the foot cleaning spigot. It was the perfect height for him to operate himself.

The house was directly across the street from the local school complete with a playground. What could be better? Here is Otto truckin'

Come on, how cute is she?

Florida

After hanging in Philly for a day we boarded a plane and headed to Jacksonville to see Grandma Bah, Lou Mom and Big Otto. This was Mette's first plane ride and it went fairly well. The flight was at the end of an already long day and while she did cry, it could have been much worse. Otto is a fantastic traveler to say the least and even his first flight was a bit rocky. The flight home was at a better time of day and went much better. She still just cat naps for about 30 minutes but she was very happy when she was awake. I did spend a lot of the flight making funny faces at her to keep her laughing but I just tell myself that all the extra face exercises will keep the wrinkles at bay. Don't anyone leave comments on how that may not work as I don't want to hear your theories.
We took a day trip to the Jacksonville Zoo where Otto got to try to touch some sting rays. This part of the zoo he was quite into, but to be honest, the whole zoo thing was a bit over his head. He was face to face with a giraffe and didn't seem to be that excited. We got to see a lot of cool animals but Otto was most interested running around and dancing in the misters they have to keep people cool in the extreme Florida weather.

Mette actually really seemed to like the sting rays as well.
While I was taking Mette to change her diaper after lunch and Grandma Bah, eric and Otto were still in the cafe, this walked by the window, super close. I have never seen a Jaguar that close. It was still there taking a nap right outside the window when Mette and I got back.

Otto went puddle hunting after a day of monsoon rain. This was directly in front of eric's mom's house. When he walked out he said to eric, "I found one, I found one!!" It kept him busy for a long time!

philadelphia

This is the way traveling should be

Philadelphia is the home of Nonna Jen and Grandpa Chris. We spent the night and a day with them before flying to Florida. Otto and Nonna made some delicious pancakes for us all to enjoy for breakfast.
After breakfast Nonna, eric, mette, otto and I all headed to the new Please Touch Museum which is beyond awesome!! We will have to go back many times as there is far too much cool stuff to take in on one visit. Including a huge Alice In Wonderland exhibit.

I actually like this photo of me.
Otto figured out how to drive this WAY too fast!
Perfect for Otto, they have a display where you can change the tires on a race car, he was in heaven.
Then you can drive.
Pit stop.
He really like the carousel. Giddy up bunny!
Getting some gas.
After the Please Touch Museum we headed to the Art Musesum where Nonna and Grandpa both work to have lunch. The conservation department is not a place to let Otto out of the stroller, but he managed to play with the tools anyway!

AAARRHHH

So here it is, our first home video. This was done without a professional camera, no studio lights. This was a spur of the moment scene that had to be captured. I had hoped to have this up a day ago but we had to compress it and are only getting it up now.

Enjoy

Unicorns and Katsura trees

I realize it has been two weeks since my last post, but things have been quite busy here. We went to Philadelphia, Florida, LBI Beach Haven and then back home. Oh boy, you are thinking, fun vacation pictures. Well, not quite. I have a bunch of cute photos from before we left that I want to get up so I am sharing them first, then I have a special treat and if I am still awake there will be va-cay photos. But my bet would be that those will be up more like Tuesday evening. I am reading a good book I would like to finish tonight....

So here are some shots from right before we left on our travels.
This is Mette with her post bath unicorn look.
This alone would be a cute photo of Mette but the best part is that grin is a grin of total self satisfaction. She managed to roll over and squirm her way from the middle of her little gym thingy over to half off the edge. She was more than proud of herself!
She refuses a NUK of any brand but is really getting good at finding her thumb, or thumbs as the case may be.
When just out of the bath her hair is quite curly, and very adorable!
Daddy and Mette, she fell asleep while they were out for a stroll.
In preparation of much traveling I downloaded some movies for Otto onto the iPod touch and gave him some headphones he could wear. It turned out to be quite a helpful tool while traveling.
Otto in the Weeping Katsura tree that is his special world in the backyard.

In other big news from the past two weeks. Mette is rolling over. Not all the time, but she can do it for sure, both from tummy to back and back to tummy. She is eating non-stop and growing like crazy. We will know just how much at our 4 mo. apt this week.
Otto is working on being 2! every day. He has good days and tough days but is always 2. We are mastering the art of zen breathing to deal with the amount of "No's" that come out of his mouth sometimes. And last but not least, Eric and I celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary on Saturday. We sure are in different place than we were 5 years ago, we sold the movie theatre, sold the restaurant, moved and had two kids. Wonder what the next 5 years will bring!
